Judgment Tarot Card
The Fool’s next phase on the Major Arcana Journey passes through Judgment. Here the Fool encounters the depths of wisdom as s/he nears the end of his sacred journey. When the Judgment card appears it indicates a time of reckoning, a chance to self-reflect on events, relationships and the life path. It is a call for clarity and perhaps a time to atone for one’s actions through forgiveness, release and compassion.
In the Hawaiian tradition there is a beautiful practice called Ho’oponopono, to make right, right. The wonderful teacher Harry Uhane Jim told me once that this truly means ‘no blame, no shame, no pain.’ This practice recognizes that ultimately, we are never ‘wrong,’ only misguided perhaps, ignorant or in pain.
Similarly in the Buddhist view we all contain the seed of the Buddha within. Buddhi which means ‘to wake, be awake, observe,’ rests deep in the soil of our souls waiting to be turned over by mindfulness, watered by compassion and illuminated by wisdom.
Well grounded judgment allows us the ability to see things from a neutral perspective, above and beyond the ordinary story of our small human problems. This card asks us to take the high road again and again from the place of disengaged compassion, willing to rise above the obsessive and toxic chaos of our pain body so that we may grow into a new phase of life. We so often find this harder than it seems! Yet every moment is a new opportunity to step into presence.
In the Rider Waite deck, the imagery shows an angel blowing their trumpet of grace and profound gesture from the skies. Below, gray colored people lift their arms to the sky hoping to be seen and heard in this moment of Divine Witness. Their gray bodies indicate the mix of black and white, reminding us to move beyond dualist thinking and all its hang ups around good/evil, black/white, male/female, heaven/hell.
“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field.
I’ll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase each other
doesn’t make any sense.
During my Shamanic Dying & Beyond course this year I had the opportunity to journey to visit people who have died. I visited my Grandmother on my Mother’s side and Rubybleu, my daughter. In each meeting I was overwhelmed with a profound Love and Grace from these dearly departed who continue to teach and guide from the other side. My Grandmother’s passion for letter writing and long cultivation for friendship inspired this video. In the absence of our beloveds we can recognize their gifts and carry them onward in our hearts.
This week, as we approach the longest night of the year, Winter Solstice, allow time to reflect and look at the events of the past year. Light a candle or have a fire during this dark time to remember the seed of Grace and Love that is always with us even if we cannot feel it. Honor your ancestors, the ones who have come before us as we carry their stories and wisdom in our own bones.
